Ethiopianity and the New Political
Imaginary of UDJP

The Political imaginary of the
Ethiopian self has produced
a New National Party ready
and willing to combat
EPRDF on the fertile soil of
the voting booth, slowly,
patiently, methodically and
democratically.

Hail the leaders for emerging
with the political imaginary
of Ehtiopianity propelled by
the powerful wind of Andinet.

UDJP must now guide itself by the political imperative of the
General Will of the Ethiopian people, by centering its activities on
the participation of the Ethiopian masses. Participatory democracy
ought to be nurtured as the right political form and moral economy
ought to be the right economic form- an alternative to oppressive
socialism, the economic form of EPRDF.

UDJP ought to be a pragmatic party, and should anchor itself on
hope, courage, faith and strategy. The party ought to appeal to the
moral dimension of all Ethiopians who are rightly traumatized by
destructive ethnicity and stage an example of how individual
Ethiopians must be cleansed from hate, suspicion, and mistrust.  The
party must forge new brotherhood and sisterhood and use all the
resources of a peaceful struggle and wake Ethiopians up from
docility, hopelessness, cynicism and ethnic hatred.

At the center of this democratic struggle is the release of Birtukan
and each and every political prisoner.  That imperative is
categorical. It ought to give the right moral frame for the National
party of reconciliation and new thinking.

This imperative must be unconditional and UDJP must fight for this
imperative patiently, courageously, and persistently with the
democratic participation of the Ethiopian people.  The party must
actively and honestly seek the help of the best and brightest
Ethiopian intellectuals and seek their expertly input.

Distrusting and discriminating Ethiopian intellectuals, the
distinguishing feature of EPRDF, must be replaced by embracing the
resources of Ethiopian intellectuals, the new feature of UDJP.

A future article will attempt to provide a manifesto for UDJP, most
particularly, a vision of a moral economy as an alternative to
oppressive socialism.
