A Lot of fun for Kids
The Celebration which was organised by Ethiopian
Association in GTA & Surrounding Regions shut down
Bloor W. Traffic, from Christie to Crawford Streets
from 10a.m till midnight. As expected many
Torontonians who are accustomed to embracing and
integrating different cultures joined the festivities
through out the day.
The dignitaries accompanied the Hon. Senator
Vivienne Poy, includes George Smitherman,
Deputy Premier Minister of Health and Long-Term
Care Ontario, Kathleen Wynne, Minister of
Education, Ontario, Frank de Jong, Leader of the
Green Party of Ontario, Maria Mina, MP Jim
Kerrigan, MP. They were greeted and welcomed by
Dr. Busha Taa, President of the Ethiopian
Association who said, " this millennial celebration is
not only about flag waving but a true sense of unique
experience, value and identity for the people of
Ethiopia." and expressed his happiness that the
celebration brought an opportunity for the Association
" to present the way Ethiopians live, the values they
hold, the clothes they wear, the songs they sing, the
gods they worship and the foods they eat to the
Canadian society at large."

"Enkutatash" said Sen. Vivienne Poy addressing the
crowd "is always a time for celebration as it occurs
when the rains end, and the new crops emerge from
the ground. It is a time of plenty, signalling new
beginnings, and arrival of spring."

and Jim Kerrigan " Wubnesh
Ethiopia" but, it was Maria
Mina who received
continuous applause by
declaring
" I will continue the fight
with you for free democratic
Ethiopia."
Also Speaking to the audience the award winning
author, Camilla Gibb who also was signing her book
'Sweetness in the Belly' and read pages from it,
explained why the " ferenji fall in love with Ethiopia "
Earlier, the representatives of the Ethiopian various
religious institutions conveyed their messages, by
calling upon all Ethiopians to continue their persistent
struggle to attain harmony and tranquility through
peaceful ways. Members of the religious groups also
performed for the occasion and drew lots of attraction
from those never exposed to the colorful Ethiopian
culture before.

Those who arrived before the noon hour's opening of
the official ceremony were entertained by DJ Berhan
and his crew's incredible selection of music.
To the crowds delight for most part the stage was all
entertainment, the list include, specially prepared for
the occasion music by locally popular students of Mr.
Sun School of music, Arabic dance by Anat, Songs
from Sudan,

the Dundumba - Drummers, HYPED dancers who have
shown great effort by presenting dances from
different parts of Ethiopia, and the collaborative
performance by artists residing in Toronto and
surrounding regions, who brought the crowd to his
feet when they presented traditional Ethiopian new
year songs followed by songs from various regions of
Ethiopia were few of the highlights of the day's long
event.
In between performances people were reminded of
using the occasion as a motivative force, to enhance
their role in the fight against common threats, such as
AIDS and global warming. Speaking on the cause, one
of former Vice President Al Gore's trained volunteer
presenters Victoria Serda, and Bruce Haines took the
podium for a presentation of The Climate Project.
Beside treats and Games, activities organised for kids
include, Track & field and a soccer tournament, and the
winners received awards from the Association's President
Dr. Busha .
Many kids as little as ten and twelve have been seen taking
a leadership role in articulating complex matters, such as
AIDS to wide range of audience in order to raise awareness.

Toronto Celebrates Ethiopian Miellennium

surrounding regions, gathered at Christie Pitts Park here in Toronto on Saturday to welcome the New
