About Selam!
by Dereje Hailu
If you are unfamiliar with the word ‘Selam’, I guess I owe you an
explanation. In most Semitic languages of the Horn of Africa: Amharic,
Arabic, Gurage, Tigrigna etc.. it stands for ‘ Peace ‘. Even in Hebrew
‘Shalom’ sounds very close, if not the same. Despite its Semitic roots,
selam is a widely & commonly used greeting among the other major
Kushitic languages such as Afar, Oromifa and Somali as well. This is
mainly due to the integration with Islam, which itself means peace.

So, every time you check my post, I greet and welcome you with this
beautiful word Selam!
Peace Be Unto You!!!
