"Unnecessary" Question of Ethiopians
By Dereje Hailu Kassa | 24, March 2009
" This writing is neither about the war in
Afghanistan, nor about the Canadian soldiers who
died there. It's rather about transparency and
accountability, above all a  respect for human being.
Why these things are eroded in my beloved country,
where an opponent's life is dispensable?....

Somalia: Arms race Vs Arms embargo
By Dereje Hailu Kassa | November 19,2008
" ...The first U.N. Security Council Resolution 733
which was adopted on January 23, 1992 a year after
President Siad Barre was toppled supposed to do
just that.  For anyone who closely follow the
situation in Somalia, it is clearly  understandable  that
what is lacking is not a new resolution,

How Free Is Freedom?

Dereje Hailu Kassa | 28 October 2007

Selam!

Perhaps, it's appropriate to make it clear right from the very start
that, this writing is not intended to provoke or disappoint any of
the movements, Fronts, Organizations,…and their nemesis,
engaged in uncompromising struggle in the name of
freedom,
while causing the loss of uncountable number of lives who
supposed to be freed.

I am not saying this just to
    avoid repercussion or
    scrutiny; rather a lesson
    learnt from personal life
    experience made me, a firm
    believer in freedom that is
    achieved from within, as a
    prerequisite in entrusting
    the freedom without.

Let me clarify what I mean by that; think about it, as human
beings we are endowed with the most sophisticated structure
called brain, thanks to science today we have a better
understanding about,  how the patterns in the flow of energy and
information within the brain, and between brains trigger the
formation of our mind. A
mind is so powerful that, it enables
one to: think, reason, and imagine even the unimaginable, if there
is such a thing.

From its inception mind is pure and innocent. Like our body it too
grows with what we feed it, as  nutritious food help a child grow
healthy, so is information for our mind. Many suggest that human
connection is the bases of the emergence of a mind, and
experience shapes the process. Therefore, it’s important to see
this conjuncture as crucial in order to appreciate the interwoven
aspect of an individual’s internal and external values created
through this process and the interdependency of their freedom.

The recently published book titled “ Yenetsanet Goh Siqed “ by
Dr. Berhanu Nega,” can be a best example for this case; this
wasn't due to the coincidental matching word in his title,
“netsanet”, translated freedom or the content of the book, which I
haven’t red yet, in fact it's the circumstances the book was
written, in this case jail, where Dr. Berhanu’s external freedom
has been taken away of importance . Based on the information
we have; he some how managed to use his internal freedom in
jail, and shared with us ( external ): his experience, thoughts, and
vision in pursuit for freedom. The irony of this example is the fact
that, if one tries to get his jailers' perspective on his case, most
probably could hear that, it was done again, in the name of
freedom.

Therefore, how free is freedom? Can only be understood, when
we take into account the relevance of defining the internal and
external values, and the importance of harmonizing them through
a complex compromise and power sharing, the goal of which at
minimum should guarantee freedom to live. Otherwise, our intent
to bring freedom, end up taking away more freedoms, which in
return only strengthen the human will, ego, ambition to search for
freedom.

“The most powerful single force in the world today” said John F.
Kennedy fifty years ago, “is neither Communism nor Capitalism,
neither the H-bomb nor the guided missile – it is man’s eternal
desire to be free and independent.” Who denies the validity of his
wisdom today?
