"Unnecessary" Question of Ethiopians
By Dereje Hailu Kassa | 24, March 2009
" This writing is neither about the war in
Afghanistan, nor about the Canadian soldiers who
died there. It's rather about transparency and
accountability, above all a  respect for human being.
Why these things are eroded in my beloved country,
where an opponent's life is dispensable?....

Somalia: Arms race Vs Arms embargo
By Dereje Hailu Kassa | November 19,2008
" ...The first U.N. Security Council Resolution 733
which was adopted on January 23, 1992 a year after
President Siad Barre was toppled supposed to do
just that.  For anyone who closely follow the
situation in Somalia, it is clearly  understandable  that

Selam!

Xxxxxx  I am glad you stepped up to share your thoughts on this
widely misunderstood and yet decisive area that determines our
movements towards finding durable solution to the problems
facing our peoples.

You wrote: “..I was very shocked when you present the real issue
about Somalia.”

After going through your posts on Medrek I learnt that individuals
like yourself who put humanity as the center of their values to be
shocked with such inhuman politics that prevail in today’s
Somalia and threatening to spread throughout the region.

You touched key aspects of the problem with possible solutions
which I believe need thorough study from every angle. I like the
wise question you chose to conclude your thought: “What is
history after all, if we can’t govern ourselves?”

It is a very good question indeed. It make me feel sad when I see
our peoples facing the most deadly and manifold challenges ever
in their history, to find ourselves not up to the task of making new
history that supersedes the hitherto one, instead deliberately use
past history as a tool for destructive purposes.

Sometimes I feel ashamed of my thoughts, when I find myself
asking, do my country people really know what is at stake here?

Don’t forget while we are exchanging opinions on relevant or
irrelevant things from our comfortable places, 600 Ethiopians die
a day just from AIDS, the figure is 6,000 for
Africa. Imagine this
doesn’t include other cause of deaths happening everyday. The
scary part is the number seems to grow each time.

The powerful who control our lives have no interest whatsoever
seeing an end to our agony and sufferings. How can they? What’
s in it for them?

Peace Be Unto You All!
