Africa Stays Up All Night to Hear U.S. Election Results
Derese Kassa, a professor at Addis Ababa University, said he has never stayed
up late for any elections results. But this is a moment he did not want to miss.

" America has history whereby the African American community has to struggle to
be considered citizens themselves and be a franchise in order to cast their votes,"
Kassa said. " Coming from this segregation and inequality to be able to see
Democratic candidates running for the presidency, the highest office, by itself is a
big achievement."

Significance of President Obama for Ethiopia & the World
" It is not because of Obama's paternal heritage and my Oromo descent, just like
many Oromos in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. And it is not simply
because Bush has been replaced by a new president. But it is because of the
hope in the principles of what Obama stands for. It is because of his stated values
of democracy and peace. It is about his stance against wars, bloodshed and
aggression around the world. Against pessimism and stubborn leadership. Against
double standards and division. It is FOR equality and peace..."

In Our Life Time
" But there is one thing we can proclaim today, without question: that the election
of Barack Obama as president of the United States of America means that "The
Ultimate Color Line," as the subtitle of Javits' Esquire essay put it, has, at long
last, been crossed. It has been crossed by our very first postmodern Race Man, a
man who embraces his African cultural and genetic heritage so securely that he
can transcend it, becoming the candidate of choice to tens of millions of
Americans who do not look like him."
