Attempting Burial
28 March, 2010 | Hannah Baker

Reams of paper validate

plotted grounds kept swept

by memory burning low.

At Nunhead Cemetery

a sun, translucent in pale sky,

lights my back as we scatter.

Not quite committed yet

a bright future is here;

one hillside rises another.

Aged fruits and incense

soften the passage for one,

an oak tree sighs for another.

Pink dusk eases us all.

Ash gone wet under the tap

settles in among the algae

which my fingers dig captive
to cool reflection on steel.
I pick myself up to stars

falling on night, they wink

as we slip back to the road

where our eyes meet

just as bus P12 pulls in.
