| One Good Day 5 May, 2010 | Teodros Kiros (PhD) He is freezing outside. His hair is disheveled. His eyes are moist red. His lips are dry and cut everywhere. He sometimes stands outside the store in tattered cloth with a can on his shaking hands, to which many passersby threw money in. Many simply put in whatever they have without any eye contact. They throw in a nickel, pennies, and a penny. Some actually smile, reach their pockets, stop by and give him three quarters, two quarters, and a quarter. Very few converse with him, and give him a dollar and more. “ Brother”, he would say to a dashing black man and ask if he could be so kind. Only one or two would care to give him whatever they can. Infact, a young man once out rightly tells him to get off his face, and walk away. The slim young man sometimes sits on the stairs, with his hands suspended in the air and looking up at the sky. On one good day he told a friend that he went home with $200 and rejoiced for days. That has not happened for the past ten years. |
| Reflection 15 April, 2010 | Teodros Kiros (PhD) He has slept all morning, next to a ninety-year-old man, who breathes with a painful struggle. The old man’s snores could be heard from far away, but G sleeps through the noise. As he rests in bed in a rehabilitation center, his mind takes him back to his distant past and he remembers his big round eyes surveying the world of his youth with a characteristic lucidity that many of his classmates still fondly remember.....More |
