The Light Sleeper

12 November, 2009 | Teodros Kiros (PhD)

He has not slept for three days,
but he hardly looks it.  He had
long planned to read the old
    and New Testaments from the
beginning to the end, a project
he started about two years ago.
    His limited knowledge has
    contributed to the slow reading.
    The frequent lack of sleep
explains the rest of the problem.

When he would suffer from lack of sleep, he would open the bible and begin
reading. He always hoped that he would fall asleep while reading. That never
happened.

Awake again after three sleepless nights, he opens the Psalms and reads the
sections on God laughing at humans, when they think that they can deceive
him, without being caught.

He laughs at himself, and thinks about the day he cheated on his girl friend
thinking that no body is watching but today he learned that the creator
watches us closely, except that  we dot not know that we are being watched.
He went back to that day of cheating and remembers the time and place. It
was in the middle of the Summer, and he had decided to go the beach. That is
when he weighed 160 lean pounds on 6ft and 1in.

That day at the beach, he saw a young woman, basking in the sun. It did not
take him long to approach her and invite her for a drink at a bar by the
oceanfront. It was early evening, and the orange hot sun was fading from the
scene, and the moon was about to take its place. Her name is Grace.  He and
Grace simultaneously praised the luminous night, while they were nursing their
third glass of martini.  Twice their eyes locked while emphasising a point on
the nature of art. Grace was a writer, and so was he. They had that in
common, and that is how it all begun.

One thing led to the other and they ended up at his cushy apartment in
Harvard square, to which they came after the ocean front bar closed.

The shades were down and the candles lit. The cold winter air came in quietly
and messaged their bodies, compelling both to hug closely, so close that their
bodies became one.

Suddenly he woke up from his dream, wondering whether he was actually
dreaming or thinking that he was dreaming.

He went back to sleep, this time, thinking that he would fall asleep deeply.
