What must be done, now?

The mighty storm has come and gone.
Political calmness must now lead the
    way. Participation and deliberation
ought to be practiced by the Ethiopian
    poors.

    The struggle for cultural hegemony
and the organizing of the mighty
Ethiopian poors is the work of the
    Opposition.

The question is, now what can the opposition do?

What is the role of Medrek as it plans the future?

The Ethiopian poors are waiting for leadership. The ruling regime is not
fighting for them, nor are the benefits of its economic growth trickling down
to noticeably change their life chances.

The tin houses are still there. There are more of them now. The massive
poverty is there also. No economic theory has changed it yet.

The ineffective kiosks and street sails are there also. They annoy as more,
since that is simply not the way of reporting small enterprise activities that
the ruling regime boasts about.

The new colleges, the clinics and the highways are there also. We gratefully
note their mere presence. Presence is not enough. Our economists should think
hard to use this infrastructure to concretely benefit the lives of the
Ethiopian poors.

The so-called Development state is not developing the poors. It is enhancing
the fancies and whips of the Ethiopian rich. That is not the appropriate target of
genuine development. Genuine development is measured by the removal of
unacceptable standards of the perennial injustices in the lives of the poors.

The immediate task of Medrek is to systematically and consistently be the
organizer, the voice and leader of the Ethiopian poors.

This work must begin now by mobilizing the poors to protest their condition,
and for Medrek to organize these protests and provide leadership.
