Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council on Monday
unanimously approved a U.S.-drafted resolution authorizing
deployment of 4,200 Ethiopian troops to Sudan's disputed
Abyei region for a six-month period.
    The resolution
    establishes a new U.
    N. peacekeeping
    force, called the
    United Nations
    Interim Security
    Force for Abyei, or
    UNISFA. Its
    adoption comes a

    deal in Addis Ababa

Ethiopia starts logistic supply for Abyei mission

    Ethiopia on Friday started
    transporting logistic supplies
for its peace keeping mission in
    the Abyei region of Sudan.

    Amoured tanks, water tanks and
other military hardware as well as
    military personnel have been
deployed to the embattled oil-rich Abbyei region to pave way for
the deployment of 4 200 Ethiopian peacekeepers.

Last week, the UN Security Council approved Ethiopia’s offer to
send troops to the region, which is contested by South and North
Sudan.

A referendum is planned referendum to decide which side the Abyei
people would like to join.

Major General, Gezaye Abera, the head of logistics at Ethiopia’s
Defence ministry said preparations to deploy the troops had been
finalised.

According to reports, the transportation of military hardware, among
other logistic requirements, by land to Abyei will take at least eight
days.

The Ethiopian troops will be in the region for six months.

South and North Sudan have welcomed the deployment of the
peacekeepers.

Meanwhile, South Sudan on Saturday officially became the 54th
member state of the African union (AU) Commission.
