Men’s 5000m returns home to Bislett - ÅF Golden League
25 June, 2009 (IAAF) - Bekele who holds the World record with 12:
37.35 will face a starting list that contains no fewer than ten other
athletes who have personal bests of under 13 minutes for 5000m. Long
standing rival and countryman Sileshi Sihine whose best is 12:47.04,
and one of Bekele’s great cross country rivals Zersenay Tadese of
Eritrea (12:59.21) who will move back down in distance having tried
the marathon this spring, will be two of the top names to tackle Bekele

Africa dominates the long distance
3 July, 2009 (AFP) - “Africa, as ever, dominated the longer distances
with Kenyan Collins Cheboi picking off the 1500m in 3:36.24 ahead of
compatriot Geoffrey Kipkoech Rono (3:36.96) and Morocco's Fouad
Elkaam (3:37.19).
In the mile, Ethiopia's Deresse Mekonnen clocked a winning 3:48.95 to
best Kenya's William Biwott (3:49.29).
The 3000m was an all-Kenyan affair as Richard Bartale timed 7:50.58 to
oust Henry Kiplagat (7:54.00) and Mike Tuiny (7:57.54).
In the 5000m, Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele bested Qatari James Kwalia in
clocking 13:04.87 as Kenyan Vincent Kiprop Chepkok took third.
Back among the women, with triple Olympic champion Tirunesh
Dibaba not at the Bislett Stadium to defend her 5000m mark of 14:
11.65, fellow Ethiopian Meseret Defar won in a comfortable 14:36.38
with Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya second in 14:37.01 and Ethiopian
Meselech Melkamu third in 14:37.50. More
Kenenisa among six left in jackpot race (Roundup)
3 July, 2009 ( M&C) - “'I'm coming back to my shape. But we all
knew that today will not be a fast race, I was concentrating on winning.
There are still four races I need to win and that is a lot of energy for
me,' said Bekele, looking ahead at the other stops in Rome, Paris, Zurich

A dream for Deresse Mekonen
3 July, 2009 ( IAAF) - “ The Ethiopian’s 3:48.95 victory was an
improvement of his national record which he set here last year when
coming third (3:49.72).
“I’m the first Ethiopian to win the Dream Mile and so this is very
special,” said the winner.More
Meseret's sprint too strong for challengers
3 July, 2009 ( IAAF) - “ The race was a tactical affair with the much
vaunted pre-event protagonists Meseret Defar and Meselech Melkamu
exchanging the lead every now and then at the head of a large posse.
Large is the word, as when the bell sounded there were still ten women
in serious contention. At 250 to go Defar went into the lead and was not
slightly challenged from that point on with the strength of her surge
silencing all. Her winning time was 14:36.38.More Watch Video
