Delegation discusses Ethiopian football crisis
18 February, 2009 ( Ethio Quest News ) - A delegation of FIFA
and CAF officials arrived on Monday in Ethiopia to discuss about
FIFA’s suspension of Ethiopia from international football, APA
reports on Tuesday.
Accordingly, the three member delegation started late on Monday
its discussion with Ethiopian officials of the Ministry of Youth and
Sports. The delegation is in Ethiopia on the invitation by the
Ethiopian Ministry of Youth and Sports.
It is to be recalled that FIFA suspended Ethiopia since July 2008
after the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) was involved in a
dispute where the former management and executive committee
were replaced by a new management.
The disagreement between the EFF and FIFA started last year
when the EFF appointed Ahmed Yasin as new president after
sacking former president Dr Ashebir Woldegiorgis. However, FIFA
refused to accept the new management saying the process was
carried out illegally and asked the EFF to restore the former
president together with other members of the committee.
However, the EFF still continues with the appointment of a new
president, which compelled FIFA to take the decision to suspend
Ethiopia from all international matches.
FIFA wants a proposed road map to be accepted by the new EFF
management.
Its road map demands the return of the former management and an
eventual election to be carried out to form another acceptable
management.
The delegation will also discuss with the former president of EFF,
Dr. Ashebir.
It is however not yet clear whether the FIFA delegation will hold
similar discussions with the new EFF management or not.
Ethiopia joined FIFA in 1952 and this is the first time that the
country is being sanctioned in its 56 year membership.
As a result of the disagreement with the new management of the
EFF, FIFA and CAF launched a road map, launched in February in
order to normalize the situation.

Ethiopia has agreed to end a long-running row with world
governing body FIFA over leadership of the country's football
federation, giving the national team the chance to play in
international competitions again.
Ethiopia were thrown out of the World Cup qualifying competition
last year after refusing to honour an agreement reached with FIFA
over restoring the local federation's officially recognised leaders.
The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) held an emergency
meeting on Friday and decided to comply with FIFA's
requirements, including holding a meeting to elect a new executive
committee, state television and local media said. Source
